"Blame it on Berlusconi" was the headline of an article in the International Herald Tribune written a few years back by Suzy Menkes. She described the collections seen on the catwalks of Italian fashion houses a product suitable for women of easy virtue, or whores, to speak clearly, just like those that appeal to Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, guilty of being the inventor of the so-called "Veline", term used by Italians to describe shapely TV presenters, scantily clad exhibitionists, as Menkes observed with a clearly stated contempt. Menkes’s protest soon encountered the indignation of the creators she cited, such as Armani, Versace, Bottega Veneta and many others guilty of presenting revealing product collections, alluring and suitable for that kind of public. Just a bigmedia dust up without any real why or wherefore.
Silvio Berlusconi is no saint, as everyone knows. Just think of all the recent scandals that have seen him involved with various escorts, including a minor. But the point is different. Silvio Berlusconi as the case that sparked a trend that the majority see as immoral? Is he the cause of all the titillating pictures that so many media and fashion magazines are now publishing?
