In Iran the great ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi has issued a fatwa against dogs. According to the hadith (narrations of the prophet Muhammad), dogs are considered impure animals; ownership of dogs is considered a sin and is allowed only for such activities as hunting or herding. The great ayatollah has declared that dogs are “unclean animals” and that “Friendly relationships with dogs are a blind imitation of Western customs; Westerners love thier dogs more than they love their wives and children". Over the last few years increased modernization has brought about the widespread custom of owning these animals; however owning a dog is considered an offence to Islamic morality which leads to the dog being taken into custody and the owner having to pay a fine.
